Start in Cinematic mode, not Sport

Cinematic mode slows all movement down by 50%, giving you time to react and making your footage buttery smooth. Sport mode is fast and fun but unforgiving for beginners. You can always unlock it once you're comfortable.

Calibrate your compass before every flight

The DJI Fly app will prompt you if calibration is needed — don't skip it. A misaligned compass causes the drone to drift, which confuses new pilots into overcorrecting. Takes 30 seconds and prevents 90% of early "my drone went sideways" panic calls.

Let the battery hit 20% before landing

DJI's batteries degrade faster if you only ever use the top 70%. Fly it down to around 20–25% regularly and the battery chemistry stays healthier longer. The drone will warn you at 30% and auto-land at 10% — you have plenty of runway.

Use QuickShots for your first cinematic moves

QuickShots (Dronie, Helix, Rocket, Boomerang) are automated flight paths that look incredibly professional. Select your subject, pick a QuickShot, and the Air 3 flies it automatically. Your first 10 "wow" shots will probably all be QuickShots — and that's completely fine.

Seriously. Go to faa.gov/uas/getting_started, register for $5, and write the registration number on your drone before you ever power it on. If you crash it and someone finds it, they can return it. And you'll be flying legally from your very first takeoff.
